Women Steering Business purchased the Grand Champion Steer at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Junior Sale of Champions on Saturday, February 4, 2017.
Thanks to the support and participation of members, friends of the organization, and sponsors, Women Steering Business leveraged the “power of the purse” to raise $240,000 for the purchase of "Rocco," Mikala Grand’s Grand Champion Steer from Grandview, Texas.
Grand declared her desire to attend college and study to be a veterinarian in this interview with NBC-DFW.
As for "Rocco," founding member and board president Becky Renfro-Borbolla told NBC-DFW and the Dallas Morning News that he will be donated to Arlington Heights High School's 4-H program.
KERA listed the purchase as one of the weekend's top 5 stories in North Texas - right up there with the Super Bowl - and we couldn't agree more!
Fox News reported the 2017 Grand Champion's sale numbers tops last year’s champion by $30,000 and ties the record set in 2015.
For a glimpse of the excitement on Saturday morning, the Star Telegram captured the moment in this video clip.
Women Steering Business did not stop there and seized the opportunity to support two additional young women, Mckayla Gandy of Alvarado, Texas and Alayna Grissett of Buffalo, Texas with the purchase of their steers.
In total, Women Steering Business expended $260,000 to assist these hardworking young women with their future endeavors at the 2017 Sale.
The Fort Worth Business Press reported more than $3.2 million was generated from the 2017 Junior Sale of Champions. Local business owners, executives and individuals were responsible for purchasing 283 steers, barrows, lambs and goats.
With $900,000 raised in total since 2013, Women Steering Business is looking forward to next year's 2018 Sale Day as our Million Dollar Year.
